Jorge Drexler..a Guru Favorite

Jorge Drexler is one of the best songwriters around! Yet another talented artist hailing from Uruguay!

I really recommend you check out his songs! he’s a really gifted artist!

I’ve actually gotten to see him perform twice in Los Angeles, and I loved it. The first was at the El Rey theater, and the second performance was at the Walt Disney Concert hall.

His performances are usually intimate concerts, usually featuring Jorge Drexler, his guitarra, and his loop/sampler. Simple yet tasteful.

Jorge Drexler actually won an OSCAR  a few years back for writing the best song in a featured film, “Al Otro Lado Del Rio” which was placed in Motorcycle Diaries, the film that featured Gael Garcia Bernal as a young Che Guevara.

More interestingly, the film was scored by acclaimed composer/producer Gustavo Santaolalla.

Check this, when he won his award, Drexler wasn’t allowed to perform his song at the awards due to the fact that no one knew who he was, and according to ABC, what really matters are ratings!  So the network producers hired Carlos Santana and Antonio Banderas to perform it for him.

It was lame. Actually, it was horrible! They butchered his song!

Enough of that…

I leave you with one of my favorite songs, a collaboration between Jorge Drexler and Jarabe De Palo!

Bajo Fondo Ambassadors of Electro-Tango

bajofondo

For all of you that enjoy smooth electronic/lounge music, I have another great group for you to check out!

BAJO FONDO.

Bajo Fondo just took electro-tango Music to another level.

This is a special project since they consider themselves a collective of composers and artists.

The front man of the group is actually genius producer Gustavo Santaolalla, the guy responsible for producing amazing artists like Juanes, and Cafe Tacuba, and also soundtracks to films such as the Motorcycle Diaries, and Amorres Perros.

Bajo Fondo is currently on tour in Europe, and will soon be playing shows in the US, in both New York, and San Francisco.

Bajo Fondo is one of my personal favs,
so please check them out! Here is a cool video of them performing a song with Soda Stereo’s frontman Gustavo Cerati.

Enjoy!

Los Amigos Invisibles Release Commercial

The boys from Caracas have released their newest production, Commercial, through Nacional Records…

The Amigos’ vision of creating dance music is once again visited in this album, as contagious latin grooves are fused with a sort of acid jazz/dance elements…

Its a dance party waiting to happen a la LAI….

I’ve always been a great fan of having my favorite artists collaborate, and Commercial features a few talented vocalists/musicians  like Jorge Gonzalez from Los Prisioneros, and the gifted Natalia Lafourcade adding their own flare to the album.

Check out these tracks por favor: “Mentiras”, and “Oyeme Nena”….

Is it another great reinvention of latin funk/dance or is it ‘mas de lo mismo’??

This is an interesting topic. Do you like to hear your favorite band evolve and use new sounds?

And if so, how much?

Or would you rather have artists stay within the lines of their style or musical genre and continue to give a sort of reinvention of their old material???

What does ‘Mas de lo mismo’ mean?? Well, if you Literally translate it it means “More of the same #$%@”. I would use MANA as an example since many accused them of doing it in their last albums.

What do you think?? let us know by leaving a comment :)

Jason Mraz and Ximena Sariñana

Mi Gente! I just came across a new a very  new and unique sounding recording of Jason Mraz’s song “Lucky”.

This track was originally recorded with Colby Caillat on vocals and was entirely in English.

This version now features singer Ximena Sariñana singing  newly written verses in Spanish, adding her own little flare to the song…

I must admit that I’m not a big fan of the verses done by Ximena..I like the original melody more….or maybe I’m just used to hearing it with Colby’s smooth voice??

I can deal with the Chorus, and bridge. They sound Ok…They work….amazing?? No se…

The translation isn’t bad, and Jason Mraz’s Spanish isn’t bad for a gringo…

kudos to both artists!  I give it a B…solid song

Completamente Chetes

latin-chetes

Hola, Qué tal??

Here at Latinmediagurus.com we’re going to introduce you to some of our favorite artists and people we feel have contributed something special to the music scene.

So here’s someone we think you should become familiar with if you haven’t so already….

Luis Gerardo Garza Cisneros, aka Chetes..

This guy is one of many gifted songwriters the latin alternative scene  has given in recent years, and is by far a gurus favorite!

Chetes started his artistic career with legendary band Zurdok in 1993, quickly rising to the top of the ‘rock regio’ (Monterrey rock scene) and soon becoming an icon in Mexico and other parts of Latin America.

Songs to look up by Zurdok’s include  ”Abre los ojos”,  ”Si Me adverti” and “Estatico”.

Zurdok signed with Universal Music and and eventually got to open up for British band Placebo!

In 2005, along with his Zurdok bandmate Mauricio Terracina,  Chetes made new project called Vaquero. Interestingly enough, the songs were now completely in English. We actually have one of Vaquero’s songs as our featured video! Unfortunately, Vaquero is now in hiatus and it’s unknown if they’re coming back…most likely not..

After Vaquero, Chetes began writing and recording  songs for his first solo album in Nashville, with producer Ken Coomer, and engineer Charlie Brocco.  Having completed the project , Chetes released his debut album, Blanco Facil in May of 2006.

One of my favorite songs  of this album is “completamente”, a song that was actually nominated for a latin grammy for best rock song.

Chetes released his second solo album in April of 2008, Efecto Domino, an album that again showcases his Beach Boys and Beatles influences.  The songs I recommend on this album are  ”Fuera de Lugar”, and  ”Efecto Domino”.

One the best collaborations Chetes has done is with Cafe Tacuba member Emmanuel del Real, with the song “16 de Febrero” for the movie “Fuera del Cielo”.

Here are some cool videos for you to enjoy!

José María Napoleón Interview Almost Finished!

Jose Maria NapoleonI just want to let you know that I finished an interview with the great master/guru José María Napoleón and I am now in the works of getting it transcribed and also translated into English.

It turned out lasting 1 hour!!

We went over his life and his career in very good depth, his philosophy of writing and he even gave us advice for young people like ourselves starting out in the industry.

He went over the artists he has worked with, like José José, and Placido Domingo and much more.

We should have the interview posted pretty recently.

If you have never heard of it, ask your mom or your dad, (assuming they speak Spanish), and they will definately know who he is.

In the meantime, I will leave you with two versions of the song “Celos”. One is by José himself, and the other is by Placido Domingo.

The Latin Alternative Music Conference soon approaches, and so we’ll be having lots of coverage on artists who will be performing at the event! Interesting enough, since we started our site, we have already featured a few of the headlining acts: Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and Los Amigos Invisibles.  We’re excited to find out that some of our favorites are going to be at the conference, hopefully you all can make it as well!  We’ll also be providing coverage on the  press and companies that are sponsoring the particular events. We want to give you  some background information on the magazines, media groups, companies/business that are all collaborating with the scene! As for now, enjoy of the complete schedule, its a lot of information to digest, so read it over a few times so you won’t miss out on anything!! We’ll be providing some pre-coverage of the shows we feel are going to be worth while and also doing the same for the panels that are going to be a part of the LAMC.  By the way, an inside source, a friend of Gurus has just confirmed to me that Natalia LaFourcade is going to be performing at S.O.B’s in New York on July 9th.

Gael Garcia Bernal y Diego Luna Star in ‘Rudo y Cursi’

The new film directed by Carlos Cuaron (Alfonso’s brother) reunites Mexican film stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna now playing the parts of two brothers from a rural lower class Mexican family who have  an intense rivalry in seeing who performs better in professional soccer. This comedy/drama is also in a way a sort of a parody of contemporary Mexico’s “narco-society” perceptions of life and values. Seeing the two stars together again brings me back to Y Tu Mamá Tambien, the film that put these two on the map and interestingly enough was written by Carlos Cuaron and actually directed by his brother Alfonso.   This is Carlos’ first feature film, and what a start with an all star line up: Top notch actors Gael and Diego, and also Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu and Alfonso Cuaron (his brother) as producers.  So if you haven’t seen it already, go out and watch it!!! Support International/ Latin American/Mexican Cinema and let us know what you think.

QUICK FACT: The song Gael Garcia Bernal is singing in the film “Quiero que me Quieras” is actually a song by Cheap Trick called “I want you to want me”.  Check it out right here!  The soundtrack was just released on i-tunes through Nacional Records.

OH and HERE’s THE TRAILER
