Jorge Drexler is one of the best songwriters around! Yet another talented artist hailing from Uruguay!
I really recommend you check out his songs! he’s a really gifted artist!
I’ve actually gotten to see him perform twice in Los Angeles, and I loved it. The first was at the El Rey theater, and the second performance was at the Walt Disney Concert hall.
His performances are usually intimate concerts, usually featuring Jorge Drexler, his guitarra, and his loop/sampler. Simple yet tasteful.
Jorge Drexler actually won an OSCAR a few years back for writing the best song in a featured film, “Al Otro Lado Del Rio” which was placed in Motorcycle Diaries, the film that featured Gael Garcia Bernal as a young Che Guevara.
More interestingly, the film was scored by acclaimed composer/producer Gustavo Santaolalla.
Check this, when he won his award, Drexler wasn’t allowed to perform his song at the awards due to the fact that no one knew who he was, and according to ABC, what really matters are ratings! So the network producers hired Carlos Santana and Antonio Banderas to perform it for him.
It was lame. Actually, it was horrible! They butchered his song!
Enough of that…
I leave you with one of my favorite songs, a collaboration between Jorge Drexler and Jarabe De Palo!

I just want to let you know that I finished an interview with the great master/guru José María Napoleón and I am now in the works of getting it transcribed and also translated into English.
The new film directed by Carlos Cuaron (Alfonso’s brother) reunites Mexican film stars Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna now playing the parts of two brothers from a rural lower class Mexican family who have an intense rivalry in seeing who performs better in professional soccer. This comedy/drama is also in a way a sort of a parody of contemporary Mexico’s “narco-society” perceptions of life and values. Seeing the two stars together again brings me back to Y Tu Mamá Tambien, the film that put these two on the map and interestingly enough was written by Carlos Cuaron and actually directed by his brother Alfonso. This is Carlos’ first feature film, and what a start with an all star line up: Top notch actors Gael and Diego, and also Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu and Alfonso Cuaron (his brother) as producers. So if you haven’t seen it already, go out and watch it!!! Support International/ Latin American/Mexican Cinema and let us know what you think.
